Requirements

Master of Divinity degree:

  • Two different Field Education courses (a minimum of 9 credit hours) are required for students pursuing the Master of Divinity degree.
  • One placement will be in a congregational setting and the other will be in a non-parish setting (i.e. social agency, hospital, prison, etc.)
  • Six of the nine required hours must be satisfied by successful completion of the foundation course, 5006: Supervised Ministry and Seminar, a two-semester course (fall/spring) which is offered every academic year. (It does not matter whether the placement related to this course is the congregational setting or the non-congregational setting).
  • 5006 (Supervised Ministry and Seminar) is pre-requisite for most other Field Education courses. The exceptions are 5007: Clinical Pastoral Education and 4116: Cross-Cultural Seminar.
  • The other three required hours of Field Education may be met in a variety of ways, including:
    5007: Clinical Pastoral Education (6 credit hours)
    5008: Summer Intensive in Field Education (6 credit hours)
    5010: Year-Long Internship (6-9 credit hours)
    5011: Advanced Supervised Ministry and Seminar (6 credit hours)
    5012: Special Project in Field Education (1-6 credit hours)
    5014: Short-term Ministry Encounter (3 credit hours)
    4116: Cross-Cultural Seminar (3 credit hours)

Master of Theological Studies degree:

  • Field Education is not required for the successful completion of the M.T.S. degree, but may be taken for elective credit, or to satisfy the "ministry in context" requirement (see catalog p. 40)
  • Courses that M.T.S. students may take include:
    5006: Supervised Ministry and Seminar (6 credit hours)
    5007: Clinical Pastoral Education (6 credit hours)
    5012: Special Project in Field Education (1-6 credit hours)
    4116: Cross-Cultural Seminar (3 credit hours)
